Imagine an afternoon. In the summer of 1975, a young researcher at the University of Birmingham, England, peers through the lens of a microscope. He is busy unraveling the mysteries inside the atomic nucleus. In his hands is the opportunity to work with the world’s only polarized Helium-3 beam. This was no ordinary research — it was the beginning of a new horizon in nuclear physics.
His name: Professor Arun Kumar Basak. Born on October 17, 1941, in Radhanagar village, Pabna district, then British India. He is at once a nuclear physicist, educator, researcher, author, and a bright star in Bangladesh’s scientific firmament.
From matriculation with first division from Pabna’s RM Academy to second place in ISC from Edward College, first class first in BSc Honours from Rajshahi College, first class first and gold medal in MSc from Rajshahi University — an extraordinary journey of merit. In 1972, he went to the University of Birmingham on a Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarship and obtained his PhD in 1975.
He worked with the world’s only polarized Helium-3 beam. He proposed new theories on nuclear interactions. He also conducted research with tensor polarized deuteron beams.
But his life is not just a story of research. During the 1965 India-Pakistan War, his passport was confiscated. As a result, he lost the opportunity to study at Imperial College London. He had earned a merit scholarship with the highest marks in the Faculty of Science, but war stopped him. After independence, he obtained a new passport in 1972. He has taught and conducted research at Rajshahi University, Dhaka University, and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST). He is the founder of Rajshahi University Computer Centre. From 1990 to 1994, he served as the founding head of the Physics Department at SUST and the first Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences.
In 2009, he was elected the only Emeritus Professor of Rajshahi University. He received the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal (2003), Dhaka University’s Razzaq-Shamsun Lifetime Achievement Award and Daily Star Silver Jubilee Award (2016), and the Nobel Teacher Award (2020). Early Life (1941-1950)
The curtain rises on October 17, 1941. In Radhanagar village, Pabna district, Bengal Presidency, British India — a son was born into a middle-class Hindu family. He was named Arun Kumar Basak.
His father, Haripada Basak, was an employee of a private company. Despite limited income, he did his utmost for his children’s education. His mother, Usha Rani Basak, was a homemaker. Arun was the eldest of his parents’ four children. He had three siblings, but detailed information about them is not available.
His childhood was spent in the natural environment of Radhanagar village, Pabna. From an early age, he was intelligent and curious. Despite his father’s limited income, he prioritized his studies. He began his primary education at the village pathshala. As a child, he showed special interest in solving mathematics and science problems. Local teachers called him “Bengal’s future scientist.”
Growing up in this riverine region of Pabna, Arun developed an interest in nature and science. Canals, fishing, village fairs — everything enriched his childhood. He thought that the laws of nature could be understood through science. He questioned everything — leaves, flowers, birds, insects. Why is the sky blue? Why does the sun rise and set? Why do seasons change? This curiosity led him to science. He gained an understanding of the practical application of science by observing farmers’ cultivation techniques, soil properties, and weather effects.
When Nazi Germany invaded Poland in 1939, spreading the fire of World War II across the globe, Arun was not yet born. However, the effects of the war reached British India. Price hikes, food shortages — these effects reached Pabna as well.
He was a six-year-old child during Partition. In 1947, when British India was divided into India and Pakistan, Arun’s family remained in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The violence of Hindu-Muslim riots and communal violence during Partition touched Pabna as well. Arun’s family took refuge in a safe place. The memories of this division and violence left deep marks on his mind. He realized — not just politics, but science and education can also bring people together. This realization encouraged him to pursue science.
During the Language Movement on February 21, 1952, Arun was 10 years old. He was then a student at RM Academy in Pabna. The news of the Language Movement stirred the young boy’s mind. He heard stories of students being martyred by police bullets. He realized — the spread of science and education is also essential to preserve the dignity of the Bengali language. The spirit of the Language Movement sowed the seeds of patriotism and responsibility in his heart.
Poverty was a constant companion of Arun’s childhood. Running the household on his father’s limited income was difficult. He would go to the market to buy school books, sometimes borrow books from friends. There was no electricity at home; he had to study by kerosene lamp. But he never complained. This experience taught him to survive hardship, to handle crisis.
Education (1957-1975)
Arun Kumar Basak’s primary and secondary education began at Pabna’s renowned institution, RM Academy. It was a traditional school in Pabna district, from which many meritorious students have contributed to various fields of the country. He was a highly meritorious student. He had special proficiency in mathematics and science. Teachers called him “Bengal’s future scientist.” He was the school’s ‘Head Boy’ . Besides his studies, he participated in various cultural and scientific events at the school.
In 1957, he obtained the First Division in the Matriculation (SSC) examination from this institution. This success boosted his confidence. He decided that he would study science and do research.
After passing Matriculation, he enrolled in Edward College (now Pabna Edward College). It was then affiliated with Rajshahi University. The college’s science department was one of the best of the time. Here he studied Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
He was one of the most meritorious students of the college. Other students in the class would seek his help in solving problems. In 1959, he took the ISC (Intermediate Science) examination. The result was extraordinary — he secured second place in the merit list. This achievement caught everyone’s attention in Pabna. The college authorities honored him specially. His extraordinary proficiency in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics amazed everyone. His teachers told him, “A great future awaits you. Focus on research.”
After passing ISC, he enrolled in Rajshahi College. It was one of the best educational institutions of East Pakistan. Here he began studying Physics with Honours. The teachers of the Physics Department at Rajshahi College were highly skilled and experienced.
Here he gained deep knowledge of Nuclear Physics, Electrodynamics, Quantum Mechanics, and Classical Mechanics. He loved working in the lab. Teachers encouraged him in various research tasks.
In 1961, he took the BSc Honours examination. The result was astounding — he secured First Class First. For his interest and dedication to Physics, he was always discussed at the college. His teachers encouraged him to pursue research. The then Principal of Rajshahi College also highly praised his intelligence.
After completing his bachelor’s, he enrolled in the Physics Department of Rajshahi University. This was an important chapter in his educational life. The intellectual environment of the university campus and the quality of education enriched him further.
Here he gained deep knowledge of Nuclear Physics, Quantum Mechanics, and Electrodynamics. His research interest developed in the internal structure of the atomic nucleus and the behavior of particles. He regularly discussed research with professors, read various journals.
In 1963, he took the MSc examination. Again he secured First Class First. In recognition of his extraordinary achievement, Rajshahi University awarded him a Gold Medal (RU Gold Medal) . This was the first major state recognition of his life. He was the only person to receive this honor that year in the history of Rajshahi University.
After completing his MSc, Arun Kumar Basak won a merit scholarship with the highest marks in the Faculty of Science. With this scholarship, he got the opportunity to study at Imperial College London. It was a dream-like opportunity. Imperial College London is one of the world’s best science and technology institutions. Studying there would give him the chance to work with world-class researchers.
He began preparing for his journey abroad. Visa, ticket, bag — everything was ready. But due to the 1965 India-Pakistan War, the Pakistan government confiscated his passport at the airport. This was an undeclared strategy to prevent ‘brain drain’. The Pakistan government did not want talented people to leave the country. They did not want to give meritorious individuals like Arun Basak the opportunity to go abroad.
He once said: “I was very disappointed then. A dream-like opportunity slipped away. The Dean of Imperial College wrote to me, ‘Your place is not vacant, I cannot wait any longer.’ I remember this incident for life. But I was not discouraged. I thought, obstacles will come, I must move forward.”
He lost the opportunity to study at Imperial College London. But he did not stop studying. He continued research and teaching at Rajshahi University. His research papers had already begun to be published in various journals of the country. He did not lose hope. He knew that one day, in an independent country, he would overcome this obstacle.
After Bangladesh gained independence, his passport was reissued in 1972. He obtained a Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarship. With this scholarship, he went to the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom to do his PhD.
The Physics Department at the University of Birmingham was world-renowned. Here he had the opportunity to use the most modern equipment in nuclear physics. His research supervisor was Professor W. E. Burcham, a world-renowned researcher in polarized beams.
In 1975, he obtained his PhD degree. His PhD research topic was Nuclear Physics. He worked with the world’s only polarized Helium-3 beam. Conducting experiments with this beam is extremely complex. Only a few institutions in the world have this facility. The University of Birmingham was one of them. He had that opportunity.
To create a polarized Helium-3 beam, special magnetic fields are required. Temperature and pressure control must be done very carefully. Arun Basak learned to do all this difficult work. He spent hours and hours in the lab, taking meticulous measurements. His patience and dedication ultimately paid off.
Using the polarized Helium-3 beam, he proposed new theories on nuclear interactions. This theory plays an important role in understanding the internal structure of the nucleus. The results of his research were published in international journals and widely praised.
After obtaining his PhD, he worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Here he had the opportunity to work jointly with international researchers.
While doing his PhD abroad, he faced further challenges. He had to overcome everything — gaining proficiency in English, the difficult environment of research, financial constraints. It took time to adapt to Birmingham’s weather, culture, and way of life. Sometimes he felt sad remembering home. But he never gave up. He spent day after day in the lab, writing research papers at night. Through perseverance and dedication, he ultimately succeeded. He built friendships with colleagues in Birmingham, took their help, and helped them in return. This experience shaped him into an international-caliber researcher.
Struggle and Adversity (1965-1972)
When the India-Pakistan War began in September 1965, the situation in East Pakistan became tense. Arun Kumar Basak was then preparing to study at Imperial College London. Pakistani authorities confiscated his passport at the airport. It was a political decision. Under the guise of simple police checking, the passport was seized as a wartime emergency measure.
He once said: “I was drowning in a sea of despair. At that time, my studies were hindered due to political reasons. The Dean of Imperial College wrote to me, ‘Your place is not vacant, I cannot wait any longer.’ I remember this incident for life. My career was set back by almost a decade and a half due to the country’s political instability.”
The reason for confiscating passports was probably the Pakistan government’s policy of not allowing talented people to leave the country. The government feared that if talented people went abroad, they would not return. Arun Basak fell victim to this injustice. He was politically obstructed. But he never gave up hope. He knew that one day, in an independent country, he would overcome this obstacle. After independence, he did just that.
When the Pakistani army began indiscriminate genocide against Bengalis on March 25, 1971, the situation in East Pakistan became horrific. Arun Kumar Basak was then in Pabna. He witnessed the atrocities of the Pakistani army, the genocide, the suffering of refugees.
Although he did not participate in armed resistance himself, as an intellectual, he provided important assistance to the Liberation War. He helped arrange the supply of food, water, and medical supplies to refugee camps in various places in Pabna. He encouraged teachers and intellectuals who had taken refuge to continue their studies. During the war, he secretly helped collect and transmit various information.
The spirit of the Liberation War moved his mind. He realized — not just science, but an independent country is needed, where justice and human rights will be established. After independence, he dreamed of building a new Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
After independence, he applied for a new passport in 1972 and received it. He traveled abroad from independent Bangladesh and completed his PhD. This was a crucial turning point in his life.
After independence, he completed his PhD from the University of Birmingham. It was the biggest achievement of his life. Through obtaining his PhD, he proved that despite adversity, everything is possible if one has willpower. He was not discouraged during the days when his passport was confiscated; rather, he conquered that obstacle.
This experience made him more determined and dedicated. He tells the younger generation: “Obstacles will come in life, but you must not stop. You must move forward overcoming obstacles. Never give up on your dreams.” After completing his PhD, he returned to Rajshahi University and focused on teaching and research. He wanted to spread the achievements of his research abroad among the students of the country.
Love and Married Life
Professor Arun Kumar Basak married Debika Basak in December 1969. Debika Basak was an educated and cultured woman. Their married life was harmonious and stable. The wedding was conducted in a very simple and plain manner within the family. The families and relatives of the bride and groom attended this intimate ceremony.
Debika Basak always encouraged her husband in his research and teaching career. When Arun Basak went abroad to do his PhD, Debika Basak managed all household responsibilities. Even after becoming the mother of three children, she did all the housework herself. While her husband was abroad, she wrote letters to encourage him, keeping track of his research. She never obstructed her husband’s work. Rather, she always inspired him to move forward.
Arun Basak would say upon returning: “Without Debika, I could not have done all this. She is the greatest companion of my life.” Debika Basak was proud of her husband’s various research successes, but never spoke of them publicly. This humble and confident woman managed everything by standing by her husband.
Arun Kumar Basak leads a peaceful and disciplined family life with his wife and children. He always made time for his family. He took special care of his children’s education. He believed that providing proper education to children is the first duty of parents.
Despite his busy research and teaching schedule, he tried to spend time with his family. On weekends, he would go out with his family, garden, tell stories. He wanted his children to be interested in science. He would often take them to the laboratory, show them simple scientific experiments. All three children have done well in their studies. Among them, some studied medicine, some engineering. They have become established in life by following their parents’ ideals.
Personal Life
Professor Arun Kumar Basak is known in his personal life as a highly dedicated, determined, and honest person. He never lived a luxurious life. He wore simple clothes, lived a simple life. Jeans and shirt with his ever-present smile — this was his daily attire. He never showed off his greatness. Even after reaching the pinnacle of success, he remained affable and simple.
Those who have worked with him remember him as a “deeply learned and lucid explainer.” Once, an MPhil student could not understand a complex concept of research. Professor Basak went to his house the next morning, sat down with tea, and explained it again himself. The student still remembers that incident with gratitude.
He loved his students very much. He always tried to capture everyone’s attention in class. He would explain complex topics with humor.
He is extremely dedicated to research. He would sit in the lab day after day conducting research. He would continue his efforts until he got the desired result. During his research in Birmingham, he stayed up many nights, sometimes sleeping on the lab floor. Sometimes it took weeks to fix experimental equipment. But he never gave up. His patience and dedication brought him to the pinnacle of success.
He always says, “There is no shortcut to research. Patience and perseverance are key here.”
His hobby is gardening. He plants various types of trees, flowers, and fruits. He believed that the company of nature gives a scientist mental peace. The roof and balcony of his house at Rajshahi University are filled with greenery. He would say, “Science means understanding nature. Gardening is a direct connection with nature.”
He created gardens of various flowers — roses, chrysanthemums, tagar, beli. In winter, he would plant vegetables with his own hands. He spent time in the garden to relieve the pressure of research. Sometimes he would solve complex research problems sitting in the garden. He would often take students to the garden, identify various plants, and make them aware of nature.
Even after achieving the highest recognition, he remained humble and gentle. He never boasted about his achievements. He always encouraged young researchers. Once, when a journalist wanted to interview him, he readily agreed. In the interview, he repeatedly gave credit to his teachers and colleagues, speaking little about his own success. Even when giving lectures at international conferences, he spoke modestly, never boasting about his identity. He would say, “Behind my success, there are many contributions from my teachers, colleagues, and students. Without them, I am nothing.”
He is extremely punctual and disciplined. His class and research schedules were strict. He was never late for his classes. He submitted research papers on time. He kept a diary, where he wrote down his daily to-do list. He followed that list. He would say, “If you cannot value time, you cannot be a scientist. Nature never stops moving on time; we must obey its laws. We must observe those laws of time in our lives.”
He not only taught in class, but was also a mentor to his students. He regularly provided career counseling, guided them in research, and even helped some financially from his own pocket in times of crisis. Countless students who have spread across the country and abroad today are established as researchers and educators thanks to his guidance. They remember him as an “ideal teacher.”
His relationship with students was fatherly. Many students still regularly check on him. He personally prayed for the good results of his students. Once, when a student could not go abroad for a PhD, he himself wrote letters to various universities to arrange a scholarship for him. The student remains forever grateful.
Future Plans and Goals (Living)
Even at 84, he wants to continue his research. He wants to work on complex problems in nuclear physics. Particularly, he hopes to solve some complex problems in quantum chromodynamics and nuclear structure. He still maintains contact with researchers in the UK and the USA. He continues his research on paper and pen. He says, “There is no age for acquiring knowledge. I want to learn and research until my death.”
He has already authored multiple books and over a hundred research papers. He plans to write more books. Specifically, he wants to write a book on the relationship between science and education. Where he wants to highlight how necessary moral and human values are alongside the practice of science. He also wants to publish a research book on the history and theory of research. So that future researchers can benefit from this book. He wants the younger generation to write about science, to advance literature-culture and scientific practice together.
In 2021, he published ‘University Education Humanity’ . It is an inspirational book for students. He wants young people to understand the true meaning of education by reading this book.
He wants young people to be interested in research and enrich Bangladesh’s scientific world. He regularly works as a mentor to students. He says, “There are limited opportunities for scientific practice in the country, but there is no reason to be discouraged. Whatever opportunities there are, they must be utilized well.”
He advises young researchers to do their PhDs abroad. Sometimes he arranges scholarships for students through his own contacts. Every year, he provides the ‘Professor Basak Scholarship’ at Rajshahi University. This scholarship encourages young students. He also encourages young teachers, inspires them to do good research.
He wants to spread scientific awareness among the general public. He writes columns on science and education in various national dailies. His columns are written in very simple and plain language, easily understood by ordinary people. He encourages ordinary people not to fear science, but to love it.
He believes, “Science is a subject of pursuit, but it should also reach ordinary people. If the people do not understand science, the progress of science will be hindered.”
He often participates in radio and television programs with the aim of popularizing science. Even in the 1980s, he used to do regular programs on science on Rajshahi Betar. He would answer questions asked by young students and give basic concepts of science to ordinary people. He still wants to continue such popularization activities if he gets time.
He is planning to preserve his many valuable research papers, letters, and documents. He wants his research materials to be useful for future generations of researchers. He has already deposited some of his important research papers in the library of Rajshahi University. He himself oversees the collection and preservation of manuscripts. He also wants to preserve manuscripts in digital format. So that researchers can easily access them in the future.
Career (1963-Present)
After completing his MSc, Arun Kumar Basak joined the Physics Department of Rajshahi University as a Lecturer in December 1963. This was the beginning of his teaching career. He was then only 22 years old. Soon after joining the university, he became very popular with students. As a lecturer, he initially taught lower-level students. Gradually, he got the opportunity to teach honours and master’s level students. His teaching method was simple and lucid. He could explain complex topics simply. That is why students liked him very much.
After completing his PhD, he worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham. Here he had the opportunity to work jointly with international researchers. As a Research Fellow, he worked on various fundamental problems in nuclear physics. He published research papers in international journals.
From 1980 to 1982, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Ohio State University in the United States. Here he had the opportunity to use more modern equipment. He conducted joint research with leading physicists in the United States. While at Ohio State, he came into contact with the American Physical Society, and the research environment there influenced his thinking. He researched cold neutrons and polarized beams there. After spending two years in the USA, he returned to Rajshahi University.
In 1978, he was appointed Associate Professor at Dhaka University. Dhaka University is the oldest and most prestigious university in the country. He did not want to stay there long. He missed the environment and colleagues of Rajshahi. After only a few months, he decided to return to Rajshahi.
At the end of 1978, he returned to Rajshahi University and joined as Associate Professor. Later, he was promoted to Professor. He conducted teaching and research for a long 43 years in the Physics Department of Rajshahi University.
While at Rajshahi University, he served in various important positions including Head of Department, Controller of Examinations, and Hall Provost. As Hall Provost, he emphasized student discipline and mental development. He was highly respected by everyone. Besides research, he worked on the development of the department’s laboratory and library.
From 1990 to 1994, he served in important roles at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) :
- Founding Head of the Physics Department — He played a key role in forming the Physics Department at SUST. The department started at this new university in Sylhet under his leadership. He formulated the department’s curriculum, played a role in teacher recruitment, and worked on setting up the laboratory.
- First Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences — He served as the first Dean of this faculty. He coordinated between various departments of the faculty, planned to open new departments. He also managed listening to and resolving student complaints.
- First Director of the Computer Centre — He was the first Director of SUST’s Computer Centre. There he worked to spread computer education and technological development. He established modern computer labs, provided training to teachers and students.
In 1997, he worked as a Visiting Professor at Kent State University in the United States. Here he conducted research in international collaboration. While at Kent State University, as an active member of the American Physical Society, he participated in various conferences.
